I can increase household revenue by taking another job. Is that the same thing? Of course, I can't increase my revenue infinitely because I have limited time, but neither can the government arbitrarily raise taxes infinitely because we'll have more tea parties and revolt and what not...

Agreed, weak dollar and inflation would suck (I listen to Ron Paul from time to time). It would be funny if China came and went shopping like old skool Wheel of Fortune...

"Hmm...I'll take the Golden Gate Bridge, and Mount Rushmore...and the rest on a gift certificate..."

There is one big differences between your personal behavior and the behavior of the federal government. The government can raise taxes and, therefore, increase revenues whenever it wants. The equivalent would be if you had the ability to simply write your own pay increase to help get you out of your current financial situation. If you write too big of a pay increase, your company folds, you're out of a job and you're even worse off than you were when you started. Of course, you can't do that (you can't, right?) but the government can.

I understand that the Obama administration believed it was acting pragmatically by issuing debt and increasing deficit spending. It's a reasonable theoretical argument. What makes me nervous are the spillover effects, both in the short term (extended unemployment and a large increase in inflation) and in the long term (large federal debt load and a shrinking workforce). I think the administration's argument is that the spillover effects might happen some time way down the road and we have some time to fix it. A depression is something that could happen immediately and we know will be really, really bad.

As for liquidation, I believe that US debt holders are unsecured. So the worst thing debt holders can do is sell their positions. China talks about this periodically (usually when they want some sort of trade concession from us). Of course, that could have the effect of substantially weakening the dollar and sending interest rates skyrocketing, which may actually be worse than having China repo the Washington Monument or whatever.

I don't know...you were one of the first Motley Fool followers that I knew. I think you're perfectly capable of making good financial decisions on your own. We have our money at Schwab, and there is a pretty wide variety of no-load, low expense (under 0.50%...in some cases under 0.30%) index funds available.

That said, I think Jeff is on to something. Suze Orman (and her ilk) offer lots of advice that is worth considering. For free.

We took Drew to BLD in the Chicago suburbs. I don't know exactly how to classify it. We had a great time. It was in a two-story bar on the order of the 'Liner. Downstairs there were plenty of snacks (goldfish crackers, fruit, veggies, etc) and some kids-oriented vendors that had information and some product available for sale. Also, there was a bartender, which was a welcome surprise.

Upstairs there was a DJ that was basically spinning together remixed versions of mostly 50's and 60's sock-hop music. Stuff that was pretty well TV-G. They had the bubble machine rolling (which Drew L-O-V-E-D), and they had all the lights and such going. On the other end of the room, they had a bunch of bean bag chairs and books and stuff that kids could do quietly.

It's funny that you mention it because Katie and I both thought this is like tailor-made for IC. Brothers would be a pretty good venue because it's so well spread-out and on Sunday afternoons when Iowa isn't playing basketball it could be a good way to get people in the door. Also, you know a DJ in the greater IC area that would be perfect for this gig...

I don't think anyone really knows what would have happened if the government didn't step in for Freddie/Fannie (or Bear, WaMu, et al). The Freddie/Fannie situation seems to have been predicated by a downgrade in the ratings of the companies' debt securities. That meant that it was more expensive for the companies to borrow money, which in turn made it more expensive for the companies to lend it. The purpose of the companies was to provide inexpensive liquidity into the mortgage markets and they could no longer do that.

Combine it with an already slumping housing market that was dragging down the broader economy and the government's choices were to either let the housing markets continue to fall (a little more quickly since no one could actually borrow money fora mortgage) or step in and try to prop up the housing market in the least socialist manner possible.

As for what happens to balloons due in four years...who the hell knows? A lot will happen in four years. Part of it may depend on what happens in the election. Part of it is determined by what Congress decides to do with the companies. Part of it has to do with how protracted the impending recession will be. I think the best bet is that the refinance on the balloon will probably be a little more expensive and may require either additional down or a bridge loan to meet what will probably be tighter qualifying standards.

Those are just a couple thoughts off the top of my head.

I would look for food prices to increase an average of 7% in 2009.

wtf? I wholeheartedly believe that anyone who is willing to deny evidence so far beyond a reasonable doubt is either delusional or stupid. And as far as faith goes--yes, I'll question some faith--how can anyone claim to believe the impossible (virgin birth, resurrection from the dead, water to wine etc) and be willing to deny the EXTREMELY possible, and oh... oh wait... the observed truth? wtf?

Jerry,
Well put. I am unclear why so many people are so quick to dismiss the discoveries made by dedicated professionals over the last half century.

I share your frustrations with the inability to convey the realities of climate change to those who reject it. One can not "choose" to believe in evidence or not. Of course they must determine the legitimacy of it's source, but we are not talking about one poorly crafted study (re: autism and immunizations).

Anyways, back to my point, the thing that intrigues me is people's (especially ideologues) knee jerk rejection of any data that supports the observations being made for the last 50 years. They are often people I consider otherwise intelligent, wise, and reasonable individuals. Do you have any idea why this might be?

Is it a misguided desire to protect one's faith? This based on my perception that typically those accepting the evidence of anthropogenic climate change have also accepted the evidence that selection pressure drives species development. The reality is that no true scientific theory (relativity, gravity, climate change, or even evolution) seeks to disprove the existence of God. They merely seek to explain the mechanisms of His created earth (or Earth if your faith demands you not recognize Him).

Perhaps I am allowing myself to get caught in the same trap as those I am speaking about? Oversimplifying world views so that I can easily categorize people into a way I can understand them with out making an open minded attempt to understand their foundation of thought.

Any thoughts/opinions on this?

Dude, I have tried to have theis same conversation with my Father-in-law that still believes that all the green-house gas is caused by volcano eruptions...After seeing AIT I tried to point out all the facts that are presented and then after the global science community got together and decided that there is in fact a climate change occuring unlike any seen in the fossil records, he still doesn't buy it because Rush Limbaugh said it was from the "Liberal" media. It is people like this that live and die by anecdotal evidence and are ruled by their fears (clean tech will cause us to lose our jobs, cause it will destroy the economy cause Limbaugh said so) that keep us from electing anyone with progressive ideas....GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!! sorry I let my left wing show again.

I find that all these applications are going to bring an end to the way we view our roles in a functioning society. I use facebook, it is a fun little diversion, and it its cool to see what people are up to these days, but as we begin to use more and more of these applications daily we begin to get a see ourselves as really important and interesting, quite frankly, we are not. Twitter is a great example, I just don't care what people are doing every minute of the day, nor do I have any delsuions that any one cares what I am doing every second. Honestly even if my wife (whom I love dearly) were to give me hourly updates as to what she was doing I think that I would flip right the F**k out. I see this especially with my students and young adults, they are soo self-involved that they can't be bothered with important issues (like the election, the enviorment, our lose of Habeus Corpus) unless it is in a twitter feed, which dumbs it down to the point of nonsense. We are part of a larger community that can only be successful if everyone pulls together, but if we are too busy geo-tagging our trip to the Ikea store, we are screwed. Sorry to rant, but ever since time magazine put a mirror on the cover and declared "you" person of the year this has been festering in me. Have a good one!
